YONIFLOWERS

Yoniflowers are imaginary botanical illustrations, inspired by real women's vulvas. The Yoniflower calls for a revolution. Women are not treated equally. Their bodies are threatened, their sexuality oppressed, and their power denied. Patriarchal restrictions on female sexuality dictate a singular idea about how a vulva should look. These narratives exclude the natural diversity of female bodies and sexual expression. The Yoniflower reminds us to respect organic female power, and create space for it to bloom.

The Yoniflower project was conceived by Gabrielle Abbott in 2014, as a way to overcome internalized misogyny causing women to feel uncomfortable with the appearance of their vulvas. Initially a series of watercolor illustrations, the project grew during the Seattle Womxn's march of 2017 to include screen print "Revolution" posters and t-shirts. Today, Gabrielle leads "Paint Your Own Yoniflower" workshops for women, and creates custom Yoniflower portraits upon request. Each flower is given an invented Latin name describing its unique personality.
